Depending on your role, if you are paying for your mortgage, 50% of the mortgage interest paid via salary packaging can be claimed as exempt if you live and work in a remote area. The exemption applies only to the salary packaged portion of the mortgage interest (not the whole interest and principal). Payments can be one off or regular and may be made directly to your financial institution or as a reimbursement back to you.
If eligible, this benefit allows you to potentially save on remote area mortgage interest. For more information on the eligibility criteria or what you could packaged under this benefit, please refer to the Remote Area Salary Packaging Information Booklet.
How do I claim?
You can claim online through your RemServ online account. To have a successful claim experience you will need to provide the following documents:
- Remote Area Mortgage Interest 50% / Remote Area Residential (not vehicle) Fuel 50% Concession Declaration - this is required twice yearly for the required dates
- Remote Area Mortgage Interest Loan Draw Down Declaration (only required for initial set up)
- Home loan statement confirming customer name, home loan BSB and account number, total remaining on the loan and proof of two regular payments if requesting reimbursement (on required for initial set up)
- Please note, after initial set up you will also need to submit regular home loan statements showing the home loan account number and all payments and interest applied during the statement period.
